ASR trouble

I don't know if anyone has experienced this or there is a thread on it already. I am new to the forum so, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. I was traveling on vacation last week to the mountains in Tennessee. We had already been on the road for about 200 miles. Got off on some surface streets and the ASR light came on and the car began to shift very HARD. made a very loud pop and the engine and trans hit hard between gears. I was able to stop at a gas station and checked under the hood. Everything appeared ok. I strated the car back up and it was ok. We continued on our vacation and did not have any other problems. Until today and it did it again. I can turn the car off and startt it back up and it re-sets. Has anyone had this happen and what can I do about it?
Any help would be appreciated. We do not live close to a dealership (appx 60 miles).
