Default 99 Jetta - Electrical Problems Help

So, we purchased the vehicle for a steal; however, we may have bitten off more than we can chew. The car came with a kills switch and push button start. We were told that there was a control module that needs to be replaced which would cost $200-400. When connected to a diagnostic, the error indicates a faulty camshaft position sensor; however when restoring all of the original connections (eliminating the switch and button), all of the dash lights come on and the car won't even start. There is a buzzing noise from the dash panel but that's it. Could all of the rewiring cause an incorrect diagnosis or is this consistent with the problem being the position sensor? Don't want to dig into the engine, replace that only to find that it wasn't really the problem after all.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!
