89 Jetta Fuel pump problems

Hello and thanks to all who read this message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I own an 89 Jetta Flair. 1.8 Litre engine. Some time ago the fuel pump began "whining", and the car began stalling as well. I saw my mechanic who ascertained that a faulty connection was the "stalling" problem, and took care of that. The fuel pump, he felt, needed to be replaced. So we did this, and the whining noise continued. So we replaced the smaller pump, located in the tank. The whining still continues, especially when the gas gauge is below one half a tank, and/or the pump gets heated up - either from driving for a half hour or more continuously, or a few minutes of driving combined with a hot day. My mechanic tells me to keep the fuel tank at least three quarters full in order to minimize the effect, which I do, but this isn't a permanent solution. Any ideas?
Thanks, Todd
PS The car otherwise runs great, and I owned it for 6 months prior to this with no fuel pump-related problems.

Thanks for your reply, Patrick

No, the noise occurs (or at least becomes loud enough to hear) as the car heats up. Either by driving continuously for 30 minutes or more. Or if the gas tank is less than half full, the noise will begin sooner. Only keeping the tank filled seems to keep the Z"whining" sound down.
Thanks,
Todd

i have a drag car, and in that, i have a high volume fuel pump. it is very noisy all the time. if it starts when it heats up, does it run poorly? any missing and sputtering?
