Upcoming Golf Trimline Information!

The trend in the United States automotive market has been a sharp one towards very small and very fuel efficient models, and while this often has resulted in drab, low performance models, Volkswagen has worked to keep their cars economical but still sporty and fun to drive. Between their high horsepower subcompacts and their fun to drive convertibles, VW engineers have worked to offer options for every motorist.

The return of the VW Golf was a popular one and met excellent reviews, and over the past few months there have been rumors-turned-official announcements about the sixth generation of the Golf. Shortly after the Wolfsburg engineers began speaking about plans for the new Golf, they reported of the intended release of the GTI and “R” packages. The GTI will feature the 208hp 2.0L engine from the Audi A5, which combines efficiency with enough power to allow for some spirited driving, and for those who want a true performance minded VW, there is the Golf R. This replacement to the R32 will not retain the V6, but rather offer a turbocharged 2.0L engine making 265 horsepower, and there are rumors that the R may also come with all-wheel-drive.

Not everyone is concerned with pure performance, so to those who are less interested in horsepower, the most recent news from Volkswagen will offer a new trimline in the form of a convertible. Like other VWs, it will carry the Cabrio name, and this new Golf Cabrio may have a price making it more affordable to many people. The parts used for the Golf Cabrio are shared with the current Audi A3 convertible, and that layout will keep costs down while allowing enough structural integrity to make the car safe for US safety requirements. Applying currently used components also cuts down on R&D time, so there will likely not be a long wait on the release of these new Golf Cabrios to the US market.

Even though there has not been a date set, we can expect to see the new Golf drop-tops hitting the US showrooms sometime in 2010.

Just wondering if there will be a show coming up soon that we are going to try to go to as a club?

Any electric vehicles on the horizon for VW? The Golf's body seems like the perfect vehicle to be pushed around by an electric engine.
