Default Pioneer receiver/6disc install

I have a 98 Passat, stock, no modifications. I would like to install a Pioneer receiver and indash 6 disc changer. Checked some local audio stores for estimates, range from $110-170. Any help in doing this myself and what would be needed? I dont claim to be electrical but am somewhat mechanically inclined and not afraid to try.
Thanks Matt

if you go to a large electronics store, they should sell install kits that apply to certain vehicles/certain head units.

yeah what patrick said they have install kits at walmart. its so easy to install a reciever and if you get the install kit you dont have to chop any of your factory wires.
