Default 2002 Passat Radio

I have a stock Monsoon CD/Radio/Tape player. A few quirks started happening within the last month. The volume on Max is not loud at all. If I reduce the volume to Min, I cannot turn it up unless I turn the unit off and then on again. The balance and fader are not working correctly. The dealership told me I needed to replace the unit. Unfortunately, I really don't trust them, but they may be right. Is this common? Being a first time VW owner, I don't know. I was told that it may be as simple as a fuse replacement, but to watch that I don't screw up the radio code.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
