Default Tire pressures

I am just looking for some basic (not too technical feedback) on recommended tire pressures. I have a 2004 Jetta TDI that I just put new H rated Michelins on. The sidewall of the tire says 44 psi. I have always been a believer in keeping tires pumped up to close to max pressure for better tire wear. The car is used for basic driving. The door jamb has recommend pressures of 33/34 for the front and 41/42 for the rear. I'm showing these VW pressures as a range because I don't remember exactly which number is correct. The glaring difference here is in the front tire pressures being way low compared to the tire mfg's max pressure number. So I'm wondering if I really want to keep the front tire pressures that low. Comments?

Thanks all!
