Default Reset maintenance light on 2006 Jetta

I have a 2006 Jetta 2.5 and the maintenance light comes on every time I turn the key (happened to me several months ago because i was due for an oil change). I'm getting my oil change but this time i'm not going to the VW dealership and don't know if the shop i'm going to knows how to reset that light. Does anyone know how to reset the service light? I've read something about putting the key in and pressing the odometer gauge then turning the key (not starting the car) and pressing the minute button at the same time and then releasing or something along those lines. Does that work? Thanks for all the help

Im sorry to say that your oil light does not affect your cars performance. Its meerly a reminder to get the service done. The indicator can be reset by myself, or anyone else with a code-reader.

On your model I heard you can do this:
Hold down trip button, turn key to on postition (while still holding trip), press the clock button and release trip the clock button). Didn't work on my '03 jetta, I don't belive my year will trigger the MIL light for oil, I had to reset mine because a hose came off. What I did was take the ground wire off my batterie for 15 mins. It won't affect your radio and works perfectly.

Im due for an oil change in about another 3k miles. However, I got lazy and didnt reset the computer. Its telling me that its due...Will this false warning affect the car. The other day I started the car, put it in reverse and it died....twice. I put it in drive and then reverse and it was fine. I dont know if the engine acts differently when it "thinks the engine is due for maintenance. If not, I will wait it out for another 3k.
