96 Jetta w/ no power at fuel pump fuse
Hi all:
I've got a tired 96 Jetta GL / 2.0 that sputtered and died while driving it the other day. Fuel was 1/4 tank, coil, wires, plugs, starter, battery & dist. cap are newer so I did not suspect these. Noticed I didn't hear the fuel pump. Left it for a couple of days and it started right up but died at throttle. Pulled filter and no fuel from pump. Assumed & installed new FP relay (167) and still no pump but it starts (for now, until the fuel runs out of the line). Checked fuel pump fuse 18 & it's good but no V+. Checked leg 87 of FP relay and there is 12V+ at ign on. Found fuse 18 appearances on back of fuse block but where do they go from there? Top fuse blade goes to Red w/ Yellow wire, bottom blade goes to thick Red w/ light blue wire, and leg 87 of FP relay goes to white wire. And from there....? The diagram I have shows (167) leg 87 going directly to fuse 18 but this is not the case with mine. My meter DOES show that I have continuity between leg 87 and fuse 17 though - the blinker fuse? Any one have any ideas why I would have no V+ at FP fuse 18 with a good FP relay?
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum.
I don't have a wiring diagram for that model. There should be an inertia switch which is fed from 87 on the fuel pump relay. Its a matter of circuit testing with your multimeter. The fuel pump should run for a second or two when you turn the ignition on to prime the system. Some will do this when you open the drivers door.
When was the fuel filter last changed if you don't know then change it.

Hi Keith & thanks for the welcome.
Unfortunately, I get nothing at all at the pump - not even momentarily. Right now, I've got the pump aimed into a bucket and the bucket is dry after numerous ignition turns :/ I've got no voltage at the pump fuse - is that normal?
The filter was replaced about 5 years ago.
Thanks again

Can you give the pump a seperate power feed? If the pump works then its got to be the wiring or control - relay, ecu.
