Default 2000 Jetta trunk stuck closed after using WD-40 on struts....

My 2000 VW Jetta GLS trunk was getting quite hard to lift up and very stiff compared to when I got it in 2002. So, I thought it was a good idea to srap some WD-4O on what i think are the "struts." The arms that connect the trunk door to the actual body of the car. So, after spraying the WD-40 i lifted the trunk up and down a few time and shut it closed. About 4 days later i tried to open it and it is stuck closed. When i press the remote i can hear the motor working except the trunk does not pop open. I tried crawling in the back throught the seats and i removed the carpeting and the lock it now visible. How do i manually get the lock to unlock? Or how can i fix this?
