Default Temperature Warning Light

Hi all, I'm a new member. I have a 2002 GTi and the water temperature warning light has started to come on, with its accompanying warning beep. It only happens first thing i nthe morning or when the car is cold. it does not happen when get back in my car after driving it. It comes on after a few moments of running and stays on until I turn the car off.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? is there a quick fix? or do I need to take it in for service? Other than the warning light, I'm not having any other symptoms. Car runs fine.

Thanks

couple ways to see, is first of all, and im sure you did this, check the coolant. also check the coolant temperature sensor and wiring, should sit between the air box and the motor. Not to mention the fuse... those should be quick fixes if its one of those, if not id have someone run the code to find out what the problem is.
good luck

I have the exact same car (a 02 vw gti) and with the exact same problem. just check the antifreeze coolant level. when your engine is cold, the antifreeze should be a bit below min and when the engine is hot (usualy after you drive the car around a little bit), the coolent should be at max or near the max. remember to get the coolant only at the dealer. it is a special G12 coolent only sold at dealer. ($30). make sure you mix it with water (drinking water is fine). it should be a mixture of 50/50. if this is not the problem check for the sensor or leaks in the system. good luck!

Have an '03 GTI, exact same problem. Any one have any other suggestions or have found out what the problem could be, assuming the coolent level is ok, fuse etc. Thanks
