Default A/C PROBLEMS - Bad bearing and VW's confusing compressors

Here goes my story.. I have a 1999.5 Golf GL with the 2.0L 8v AEG engine. For a long time now the bearing inside the A/C compressor clutch has been squealing. Finally this month it became really bad, like it sounded as if it was going to seize up anytime, but the A/C worked 100%. I finally parked it into the garage and then pulled the compressor. I checked on ebay and they're many replacement bearings and clutchs for Vw A/C compressors...only not for my VW After checking the part label on the side of the compressor and then comparing it with a $60 working one I was about to buy. I soon realized that VW put two different compressors in their Mk4 golf/jetta cars. The used one is a different brand called Sanden (model: SD7V16) and I have one made by Zexel of Japan (VW Prt#: 1J0-820-803B). Most of the used part places near me have the Sanden and almost all of the replacement parts I find on ebay are also only for the Sanden . I typed the VW part# into various online part sites including Vw's and it gives me a Sanden reman compressor, not Zexel...? One thing I haven't been able to find out is if both compressors are compatible (parts, hose connectors, and electrical plugs?) Does anybody know? I have been able to find so much info on the Sanden SD7V16, and the opposite for the Zexel.

I have a feeling the reason for this is my MK4 was made in Wolfsburg, Germany and somehow made its way to Canada and any reman Zexel compressors I found online were in europe or the middle east, while the majority of Mk4's in N-A came from Brazil and seem to have the Sanden, hence why I can get one practically anywhere.

I would really like to keep my AirCon, but if I have to I'll just leave the compressor out of the car and get a different belt for the the Alter + Ps.

The only thing I can suggest is you Google the info and part number and see whats available.

I have and i haven't found much. Its a shame, I might have to ditch my aircon or pay upwards of $200 for a reman one online and all my compressor needs is a cheap bearing and it will be good as new.

ETKA says 1J0-820-803B was dropped on 01/06/2005 for two seperate units 1J0-820-805 compressor - £669 and 1J0-820-811 A - electro-magnetic coupling - £332.

Compressors from Sanden and Zexel were both installed for petrol engines. However the electro-magnetic couplings must be allocated to the relevant manufacturer. On diesel engines only parts from Sanden may be installed.

They don't list the bearings as a seperate item but if you dismantled the pump I'm sure you would get the bearings and seals from a bearing supplier.

Google 1J0820805 compressor.

I tried to take apart the compressor, but apparently for the Zexel compressor you need to use some special VW puller tool to remove the pulley unlike the sanden. So that's it no go with changing parts. I've also looked at every used parts place with an hours drive of me and nobody has a working Zexel. I"m screwed.
