Temperature gauge not working

Temperature gauge not working
My son just picked out a 1992 Cabrio for his girlfriend. When driving it home, it ran hot. Apparently, now I have another car to keep running!! Funny how that works.
Anyway, the cooling fan is completely locked up, so I know this is the major problem. But, the temperature gauge doesn't work. I checked the sensor (black one) and it responds just as it should when you test it on the stove with an ohm meter. Is there something else that could cause the gauge to stay at cold and never move? Thanks. I'm new to these things. Is there a list of common problems with these things that I can look at?
It's a terribly "cute" car. Pretty peppy too for that small engine.
