if you are out of warranty, i would open the sunroof and take a good look all around the sealing area of the glass....perhaps to find a tear in the rubber lining...

There are 4 drains in the sunroof. 2 in front in the chanel, the drains exit towards the outside of the car and empty behind the front finder linning.
The 2 rear drains empty into the lip around the rear hatch at the very top. There are 2 round black caps that cover the drains and snap off about the size of a quarter.

I have the same problem in my beetle. It has ruined the interior.

There is actually a pending class action lawsuit settlement over this issue. My 2000 beetle is part of the class and I received a notice regarding it in the mail. I think (but am not positive) that your model/year of beetle may be part of the class too.

Here is a link to a page with information about the issue and contact info. Hope this helps:

I have an 03 new beetle and i received a letter about a recall on the sunroof, but im not sure if they replaced the defected part. They will clean the drains for free at any vw dealership due to the recall. It doesnt take that long for the drains to be cleaned. But i would have them clean it and knowing them or atleast my dealership, they will tell you what is wrong and more for free. lol Although I have not had a problem with my sunroof leaking.

I actually just got off the phone with the VW dealership here about the airbag sensor recall and she told me the sunroof drains are a recall. Try calling your dealership and see what they say.
